Vapaudenristin ritarikunta
Order of the Cross of Liberty

The awards of Vapaudenristi (Liberty Cross) are issued during war and peace to officers, non-commissioned officers and crew of Finnish Defence Force for military merits and to FDF employees or other civilians for deserving activity towards FDF.

For special performance at the front or for special leadership the Vapaudenristi 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th classes may be issued "tammenlehvien kera" (with oak leaves).

The recipient cannot be issued an award of lower class of the same type than what he already has.

Vapaudenristi may be issued for war time merits to FDF units and to Finnish organizations and establishments.

Awards of Vapaudenristi may also be issued to foreign citizens.

If a recipient of Vapaudenristi award is guilty in such actions that he cannot be seen worthy enough to wear his award anymore, the award may be cancelled.

Mannerheimristi

Mannerheim Cross may be awarded in two classes to Finnish Defence Force soldiers for extraordinary bravery, highly notable achievements in battle or exceptionally outstanding leadership. Its awarding is not dependent on the rank of the nominee. The recipient becomes a Knight of the Mannerheim Cross.

Mannerheim Cross can be compared with the British Victoria Cross or the American Medal of Honor, being the highest military honour awarded in Finland.

Some 191 MR2:s were issued. Four men received it twice. Two of those four were fighter pilots - Kapt Hans Wind (LLv24) and Lentm Ilmari Juutilainen (LLv34). Mannerheim Cross 1.class was issued only twice, to Marshal Mannerheim himself and to Chief of Staff General Heinrichs.
